The Electricity At Work Regulations
The Electricity At Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers and employees (including self employed people) to comply with the provision of the regulations and take reasonably practicable steps to ensure no danger results from the use of such equipment. To meet these regulations it is necessary to have in place a program on inspection and electrical safety testing of portable appliances.
This involves electrical appliances being routinely inspected and tested by a competent person.
The Health and Safety at Work Act
This puts the duty of care on both the employer and the employee to ensure the safety of all persons using the work premises. the act places such an obligation in the following circumstances:
- where appliances are used by employees
- where the public use electrical appliances in establishments such as colleges, schools, hospitals, gymnasiums, hotels, Bed and Breakfasts etc..
- where electrical appliances are supplied or hired
- where electrical appliances are repaired or serviced
